Samaniego cross

Processional cross from the parish church of Samaniego (Alava). It bears two marks or punches, one from the town of Nájera and the other from Juan Alonso Butrón, a silversmith from this town in La Rioja. It has been dated to around the second quarter of the 16th century and its structure recalls Castilian examples of similar characteristics and time period. It has a Gothic form with straight arms, oval expansions, trefoil finials ringed all around by a crestal border. It is decorated in Renaissance style with grotesques, scrolls and cherubs, among other motifs. It has a very complete and varied iconographic programme and is presided over by a Crucified Christ with three nails on the front and the Assumption on the back. The ensemble is completed with scenes from the Passion, figures of the Church Fathers, Apostles and saints. It is set within a large, two-part decorative support in architectural form decorated with pinnacles, cresting and carved canopies under which the Evangelists and Apostles are sheltered
